A GNSS-R Bibliography

Version date: 2025-11-03

Total number of entries: 1972

This GNSS+R Bibliography project aims to collect references to published scientific documents of possible interest to the GNSS+R research community. Its contents is based on contributions of its members.

Initial contributors were Estel Cardellach, Jim Garrison, Steve Lowe, Manuel Martín-Neira, Serni Ribó, Antonio Rius, Chris Ruf, Rashmi Shah, Weiqiang Li, and Valery Zavorotny.

To the previous version of this bibliography we have added the results of a search in the OpenAlex, a free index of the world’s research ecosystem (see https://openalex.org/ for details) using its Application Programing Interface.

In addition to references to reflectometry using signals from the GNSS constellations and other sources of opprtunity, this bibliography includes some entries related to early work using direct and reflected signals from different astronomical objects.

This bibliography will be updated regularly from the OpenAlex. Please expect 1 to 3 months delay between the actual publication and its appearance in the bibliography. If after 3 months of publication, you notice a missing paper, please inform us trough the email address: ift-gnss-soop@ieee.org.

Send to the same address bibliographic information, including DOI or url, for missing documents.

The Making Of

Ever wondered how this beautiful bibliography came to life? No, it wasn’t the work of a highly caffeinated grad student (well, not entirely). It’s actually the result of a collaboration between human curiosity and machine efficiency — a blend of cutting-edge technology, old-fashioned curation, and a sprinkle of serendipity. Inspired by advice from Terry Sejnowski’s book ChatGPT and the Future of AI (see review by PM Tagarro, Nature 635, 284-285, 13 November 2024, link), we decided to enlist ChatGPT’s help in crafting a clearer and more structured explanation of how this bibliography was built. We also acknowledge ChatGPT’s assistance in refining the Python code to handle inconsistencies in metadata.

Step 1 - Casting a Wide Net with OpenAlex

This step is performed monthly by a scheduled Gitlab CI/CD pipeline. We use OpenAlex, a comprehensive scientific database, and the python packages doi2bib and bibtex-tidy to obtain a clean bibtex file. We cast a wide net, using search terms related to GNSS Reflectometry. OpenAlex helps us search across titles, abstracts, and even full texts — which is great, but also means we catch some strange fish along the way. Who knew GNSS could stand for “Gnomes Navigating Swiss Submarines”?

.

Step 2 - Filtering Out the Weird Stuff

Once we have our initial catch, we apply a bit of manual and automated magic to filter out the obviously unrelated papers. This step is partly automated (removing papers from dubious sources) and partly human (eyeballing suspicious titles that sound more like medieval poetry than remote sensing).

Step 3 - Not All Publications Are Created Equal

We like books, chapters of books, journal articles, conference papers, and PhD theses. We’re not too fond of random technical reports or “miscellaneous” entries, so those get politely shown the door.

Step 4 - Continuous Improvement (a Fancy Term for Feedback)

Even with all this technology, we know we’ll miss a few gems. That’s where you — the kind-hearted reader — come in. If you spot an important paper missing from this list, tell us! We’ll refine our search and make sure it’s included in future updates. Collaboration makes bibliographies better.

So there you have it — a blend of AI, manual curation, and some light-hearted detective work to keep the GNSS-R bibliography in shape. Enjoy the fruits of this delightful chaos!

Complete Bibliography

This bibliography compiles works related to GNSS Reflectometry, combining historical records maintained by the research team and recent publications identified through OpenAlex searches. The bibliography is organized into sections based on the type of work (articles, books, dissertations) and further grouped by year.
